I'm Pat O'Bryan, and I've been teaching beginning Internet Marketers how to make money and have fun doing it since 2004.
When I first launched my Portable Empire Coaching Program, I was pretty sure that my system could be could be duplicated, systemized and taught to others. But, I knew I needed to to test it to be sure.
I knew it worked like gangbusters for me.
 This is me five years ago, on tour in Europe.
After over thirty years in the music business, I had managed to do almost everything but make money.
Tours, CDs, hanging out with rock stars, hearing my songs on the radio. That's the part I would talk about.
The hours in the van with the gear and the other sweaty musicians, the road food, the months away from my family, and... after the tour... no money-
That's the part I didn't talk about.
And then there's the joke about guitar players. "What do you call a guitar player who loses his girlfriend?"
"Homeless."
That almost happened to me, too.
After my single-wide got repo'd, my son and I would have been homeless if my girlfriend hadn't let us move in with her.
That's when I got serious and developed the Portable Empire System.
There's nothing like looking homelessness and poverty right in the face to motivate you, right?
What happened next has been told in several books, including a few best-sellers, but just in case you haven't heard, here's the story:
To make a long story short:
One of my best friends, Bill Hibbler, had left the music business and was starting to find some success as an Internet Marketer. He'd been following Joe Vitale online for some time, and noticed that Joe's emails were now referencing Wimberley, Texas.
Bill and I lived in Wimberley. I had never heard of Joe Vitale. I was still struggling to make it as a musician.
Bill contacted Joe and asked him if he would like to have lunch. He let me tag along because he knew Joe was into blues guitar- I'm a blues guitar player, and have played with a lot of Joe's heroes.
After I got an inkling of who I was talking to, I asked Joe to help me write press releases. He declined, but offered to teach me in return for guitar lessons.
I learned how to write press releases, but I also got fascinated by Internet Marketing. I started experimenting with making products of my own.
Soon after, Joe put on a seminar in Austin and slipped me and Bill a couple of passes. I couldn't afford a hotel room, so Bill and I drove to the seminar each day from Wimberley. Joe let me take some of my first products- they were CDs of Think and Grow Rich Automatically. I took 50, thinking that I'd have plenty left over.
Wrong. I sold out the first day. I spent that night burning more CDs, labeling them, and putting them in cases. Over the weekend, I sold out of the new batch, too.
On the ride home from Austin, I turned to Bill and said, "I think there might be something to this Internet Marketing thing." |
After beating my head for thirty years against a door marked "pull," I finally just pulled the door open. At least, that's how it felt to me.
One product led to another. Each promotion got bigger. Word got around. People started talking and writing about the broke blues guitar player who was making a pile of money on the internet. Eventually, people started asking me what I was doing. They wanted to do it, too.
 It wasn't long before the largest non-fiction publisher on the planet asked me to write a book about what I was doing. I did, and it's called "Your Portable Empire- How To Make Money Anywhere Doing What You Love." It quickly became the best-selling business book in the country.
In the last few years, I've put on many live events that have been attended by people from all over the world- including six UnSeminars.
As a musician, I already had pretty good sound recording gear, so making audio products was easy. The UnSeminars needed to be video'd, so I started a video product company. That allowed me to market the videos from UnSeminars (which led to my first $100,000 month!), and since I've got the cameras and editing gear, it's easy for me to put out video products.
So: from "broke musician," to CEO of an International Information Marketing Company, Best-Selling Author, Seminar Promoter, Video Producer, and Internet Marketing Coach- in less than five years.
Things moved quickly after that. I was hooked. There is a rush you'll feel when you wake up in the morning and check your email and see screen after screen of "you've got cash" emails- and realize that while you were sleeping you made more money than most people make in a month. Or a year. It happens, and it feels real good.

Here's the truth: I had no idea what I was doing.
Things were moving so fast, I didn't have time to think about it. I had help from Joe, and my other Internet Marketing friends, when it came to the basics: how to set up an autoresponder, make a squeeze page, that sort of thing.
But when it came to my business, I was making it up as I went along.
I zoomed past most of my friends quickly, because I was doing things they were doing, doing some things they weren't doing- and NOT doing some things they were doing, too. But, I hadn't really taken any time to think about what I was doing that was so different- and was bringing such different results.
I felt a call to teach what I was doing.
Having spent most of my life struggling, I know the soul-sucking reality of the "real world." Like most musicians, I had "day jobs." I waited tables, worked construction, unloaded trucks- and I hated it. Even when I had a desk job in an air-conditioned cubicle, the reality of having to be at a certain place at a certain time and do what I was told- whether I wanted to or not- even if I knew for a fact that it was not the right thing to do- sucked.
The underlying philosophy of the Portable Empire System is that a job is the least effective way to make money.
Now I was making money hand over fist without working much at all. If I wanted to take a break and read a book, smoke a cigar, hang out with family and friends, or listen to music, I could. Any time I wanted.
I could work from anywhere there was internet access. I kept building my Portable Empire as I traveled to Europe and across the United States. I blogged from castles in Germany and wrote blog posts from the beach.
Why, I wondered, would anybody NOT want
to live like this? I had to share the news!
So, before I put on my first UnSeminar- before I wrote any books- I sat down and devised the Portable Empire System. I analyzed what was working for me, and listed the things that hadn't worked.
Through the years, I've modified the system. Technology changes. And, the longer I do this the more tricks and strategies I learn.
I put it all in my book. At least, all I knew at the time. I wrote that book almost two years ago, and I've learned a LOT in the last two years.

Passive Income: work once, get paid many times.
Multiple Streams of Passive Income. Create your stream of passive income. Repeat. Repeat.
Pick a niche that is linear. Each problem has a definite solution, and each solution leads to the next problem.
Pick a niche that you are knowledgeable and passionate about.
Every problem is a product.
You need something to sell and somebody to sell to. Build your list every day.
Your list is your business, but the GOLD in your list is your relationship with the PEOPLE on your list.
Use Social Networking to augment your marketing, but don't RELY on Social Networking-
Most importantly, be yourself. People resonate with authenticity, and can tell when you're faking it.

Why (most) Internet Marketing Coaching Doesn't Work |
Through my seminars, forums, consulting, books and videos, I've taught hundreds of people how to create their own Portable Empires.
